  4. My favorite breed is the Orpingtons, they are so sweet and great with my kids. I don't have a Lavender yet ;)

    ReplyDelete
  5. My favorite breeds are the golden laced Wyandotte and ameraucana they both have the prettiest voices, are very friendly and sweet. Added bonus, the ameraucana egg coloring :)

    ReplyDelete
  6. I would have to say barred rock because of the one we have. She is friendly and loves to sit in your lap. My kids have helped raise chickens and would love the opportunity to do it again.

    ReplyDelete
  7. My favorites are my orpington's. They are so sweet and loving, not to mention beautiful. The blue laced red wyandottes are so pretty too.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I have always wanted Marans. Those beautiful dark eggs.... I got three last year and they all turned out to be roos! LOL Out of the girls we have I would say my Americana is my favorite, not just because of her beautiful blue eggs but her sweet personality. Can you tell I have a "thing" for pretty eggs?!?! Green eggs would be super cool too. Okay, no more drooling of egg shell colors..... LOL

  9. I don't have a favorite breed yet because I haven't had mine long enough to decide... I currently have 2 ea of austrolorp, silver laced and blue laced red wyandottes and salmon faverolles

    1. Lastly I want a box if new chicks so my friends can make even more fun of me since I only wanted to start with 3 or 4 hens! Add me to the crazy chicken lady club

    2. I have silkies and cochin bantams and would love to add your beautiful chickens to the group. I tried to resist but it was futile. By all accounts, you provide wonderful chickens and we chicken lovers thank you!

  10. I love the personalities of my Isa Browns.

  11. It's so hard to pick just one or even two favorites! I am new chicken owner so I don't have experience with too many breeds, but Wyandottes of any color and the lavender Orpington are fantastic. Friendly, hardy and beautiful. On the other hand, who could pass up the beautiful eggs from Maran or Ameraucana?! Ugh, see? Any addition to my little chicken family would be perfect, to be honest. I love them all!

    ReplyDelete
  12. I like Barnevelders. Sweet-natured, thrifty and excellent mothers, they lay well year-round and their eggs are dark brown and plentiful. I hope to win because a box of chicks is like a box of chocolates - you never know what you're gonna get. With only one child, raising hens has been my opportunity to revel in fertility.

  13. Amers! No, Orpingtons! No, RIR! No, Australorps! No, Polish! I don't think I can choose a favorite breed. Asking is almost a form of cruelty. Almost.

I'd love to win a box of chicks, as I lost the box I ordered this year to a late spring cold snap. From tracking, I knew they were sitting in a trailer at the post office annex on a Sunday night. Picked them up early Monday morning, yet sadly, not one made it to Wednesday. It was disheartening to say the least. (Oh, the hatchery did right by us and offered credit or another shipment. I was afraid of another cold snap here in the South so we ended up with a refund).

I think I'm ready again, and our falls here in Georgia are mild.

  14. Buff, barred, austrAlorp, Easter egger

    I would love to win

  15. I love my Americana! But I would love to get my hands on an Austrolorp, Olive Egger and a Lavendar Orpington!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Tried a new breed this spring, Pioneer, pretty and big, always looking to add new breeds from new places so that when I hatch some of my own eggs, it's a great surprise

    ReplyDelete
  17. I have always LOVED the Jubilee Orpington but I hatched a Chocolate Orpington this Spring and she is just PRECIOUS!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I ordered a few black copper maran eggs last December, only one chick hatched and it didn't make it :( So I would really love to have one of those because they are absolutely stunning birds. If were to go off egg color it would have to be an Olive egger! Such a beautiful egg. Right now I only have one chicken. She is an Orpington named Mable and everyday she perches on my shoulder while I work in the garden. She even comes in the house and watches TV on my lap. Her favorite thing to do is get a blow dry right after a warm bath. She's my baby but I'm concerned she's lonely being the only bird.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I love lots of breeds! Ameraucan's ,Olive Eggers, and Maran's . Polish and silkies! Thanks for the offer!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I haven't had many kinds, but I do love the barred rock. I've had several different kinds that I didn't know what they were, but all get to run around and have a good time eating bugs :) Would love to win some babies!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Ohhhh, I can't chose just one...I love all my chickens. I do love the big, burly breeds like the Orpingtons, Sussex, Cochins, Australorps, oh so many. I'd love some new chicks. My girls are getting "up there" and deserve to retire and sit in their rockers.

    ReplyDelete
  22. We love all our chickens. We especially love our Polish, Mohawk - she is very sweet. We really love the Ameraucana and our Tiger just disappeared last week, so we miss her very much. But honestly, it would be so hard to pick which is our favorite- Black Jersey Giants are so wonderful too!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I only have a few types so far, but I would say that I like the Americana's the best because of their beautiful eggs. Would love to win babies !!

    ReplyDelete
  24. We have Lavender Orpingtons and French Blk Copper Marans and then red pullets for our personal egg use and for selling a few dozen at a time. I would love to have some Jubilee Orpington chickens in our flock. I find the Orpington breed to be very friendly and good winter egg layers. I love the quality of the chickens I see on your pages.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Oh, I have about a million favorite breeds! Each one seems to make me fall in love for different reasons. I have no orps though, and I would love to fall in love with them! I think so far my fav is an astralorp mix roo that is gorgeous and regal and fair to all his underlings lol.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I like them all :) I enjoy having different breeds for their beauty and different egg colors!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I love Black Copper Marans and Welsummers because they are sweet and lay dark eggs. Why would I want a box of chicks? Can you have too many chickens??

    ReplyDelete
  34. I love the look and personality of my Buff Orp hen, so I am considering adding some more Orp's of different color varieties to my flock. I also am thinking of adding an Araucana, as I find their rumpless look to really make them stand out in a flock :) You all have such beautiful chickens!

    ReplyDelete
  35. My 2 faves are the Orphingtons and the Bantam Cochins! We love those two types!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. If I could only choose one breed, I'd choose the Blue Laced Red Wyandotte. I think their coloring is so stunning. As to why I'd want a box of day old chicks, well, who can resist a box of day old chicks?!?! I have an 10x12 coop and 11 acres, but only 15 hens and 1 rooster, so there's definitely room for more.

    ReplyDelete
  37. My favorite breed of chicken I raise is the Barred Plymouth Rock. I would love to have some Marans, Orpingtons and Ameraucanas and that is whyI need a box of chicks! My brooder and gow-out coop look very lonely ;)

  38. Oh dear. I don't know if my comment went thru or not so I will try again. Luckily I copied it before publishing. :-) Sorry if it duplicates.
I got a big batch of chicks late this last spring and just now we are getting a few eggs. We got straight run of 10 each of 8 breeds. Gold Laced Wyandotte, Delaware, Barred Rock, White Rock, Buff Orpingtons, Light Brahma, Black Astrolorp, and Ameraucana. All are doing great. We've started butchering the extra roos we don't plan to keep. So we will have one rooster of each breed. I wanted Barnevelders, Black Copper Marans and Welsummers but there were not any ready at the same time as the others. I want the dark eggs and then I want to cross the dark egged breeds with the blue egg breeds and see if I can't get chickens that produce olive and other shades of eggs. We built a huge Chick Mobile to put out in the pasture.

  48. I love my Buff Orpington hens. They're such loveable girls. We have two each of Barred Rock, Gold Laced and Silver Laced Wyandotte, Black Sx Link, Jersey Giants, Buff Orpingtons and Rhode Island Reds. We raised them last Spring. It's so neat to watch how fast they grow and how their personalities change. Our girls are more like members of the family than anything else. Our son tells everyone about them. We call him the chicken whisperer. They love him. Once in a while they'll fly up and sit in the yard swing with us for a bit. We're looking to increase our "bird herd" so a free box of chicks would be lovely!

    ReplyDelete
  49. My favorite chicken? Any chicken living in my barnyard. ;) I have a Barred Plymouth Rock that jumps in my lap & a Silkie that follows me everywhere.

  52. Buff Orpington is our favorite chicken for egg laying. We LOVE our chickens! Not only do they provide food for our family, but they serve our community as well :) Chickens also are teaching our children responsibilities in regards to caring for another being. We lost some of our best layers this summer when a black snake found a way to get into our coop. Our kids cried for days and so did I. Thank you for this opportunity. What a great thing you are doing!!!

  59. I am new to chickens, but right now my favorite is my Marans. She loves to sit in my lap. I would love to win a box of chicks, because my husband just built a huge chicken room in our barn. We only have 6 girls, so I need more chickens to help fill it up!

    ReplyDelete
  60. I just love chickens but Orpingtons and Marans are probably my favorites. I love big fluffy chickens.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I have come to love the blue ameracauna. Just for this reason. A few weeks ago I rescued a blue roo covered in lice, I mean really covered! He was absolutely afraid of being touched. He would scream if he was held. It took me a couple of days to bring him to the nice side. Till this day he is so gentle and he really is affectionate. It would be a wonderful experience to see more of these blues in my flock. It feels real nice to walk out and hear him just carry on and make a commotion just for me to pull him out of his quarantine cage. His favorite place to be scratched is his beard. He closes his eyes and you can tell he loves to be the center of attention.

    ReplyDelete
  62. My favorite is the one who likes to cuddle in my lap....oh! That's almost all of my little flock. So far I have Barred Rock, Australorp, Orpington, Polish, Salmon Faverolles, Cochin, Silkie, Easter Egger, Russian Orloff, Cream Legbar, Swedish Flowers. I would LOVE to have Welsummers or Marans, or Croad Leghorns for more variety in egg colors. I don't think there's a bad breed of chicken out there. Would be grateful for whatever you might like to award as a prize!

I have been yearning to start raising chickens again. I think I would really enjoy the Black Copper Marans and the Ameraucana's from what I've heard about their sweet, friendly personalities and their beautiful eggs. Thank you so much for this opportunity. I love your blog and your recipes are fantastic!

  81. Black Copper Marans are so cool. The dark brown eggs look fake. We are learning how to raise chickens for cage free eggs. The chickens in the yard are fun to watch. I like giving eggs to my teachers and hearing their reaction to eggs that did not come from a store.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Black Copper Marans! They are gorgeous, sweet tempered, and the eggs are beautiful!

  88. My favorite breed of chicken at this moment is my Barred Cochin Bantam Rooster. He is about 2 years old now and is one of the friendliest, most mellow chicken I have had. He babysits the new chicks when their mama's need a break, finding tidbits and bugs for them as he goes. He will protect them almost as strongly as the mama's will against one of our dogs, cats, hens, ducks, roosters, (I have 8 total now with the crowing of my beautiful white crested Blue Polish hen I picked up a few months ago) and even my turkeys (1 Tom and 2 hens), who might cross into what he considers the chicks "safe space". When not babysitting he is looking for goodies for whichever hen happens to be tagging along with him that day. He even is a self-appointed broody hen guard at times. Boo-Boo is the perfect rooster in all ways but size. But what he lacks in size, he definitely makes up for in personality and heart.

But as I said, this is my current favorite and is apt to change at anytime since I have had most of the breeds already mentioned and they have all been at the top of the list at one time or another.

I would like to win a box of chicks because I have need of more hens due to the aging or loss of many of my hens over the last couple of years. And I love to see the littles grow up into such beautiful ladies (or gents). Besides that, Boo-Boo probably will be needing something to do before too long now that the last group of chicks are almost on their own and will be moving into the new coop I am building soon.

  89. I like most breeds of chickens, but Leghorns are my favorite layer, and my son's favorite chicken is his blue Cochin Banty hen. He packs her around a lot and she seems perfectly happy about it! I always like to try a new breed and baby chicks are just too fun!

  100. We are a small 4 acre residential farm whose been 'bitten' by the chicken bug. We currently have 8-9 breeds who lay either shades of brown or blue/green eggs. We raise them to sell their eggs and have people who will not buy other eggs (i.e. grocery store ones) now. Since these are the more 'common' breeds acquired from a large, respectable hatchery, we are looking to bring more specialized breeds so we can begin to breed ourselves. We offer tours of our farm and like to show visitors a wide assortment of breeds since many have no idea they exist.

  101. I used to love my RIRs years ago. As a single dad, I'm looking for wholesome ways to show my 3 children the joys of producing your own and getting back to basics. Showing them that eggs don't come from the supermarket would be awesome! With that said, I'd love to raise Marans, Ameraucanas and Welsummers to really blow them away with what an egg could look like!! It's obvious from your website that you take great pride in what you do and I'd love to win a box of your chicks to help pass along the joy of chicken care to another generation. Thank you, Mike

  115. Hmmm, my comment didnt seem to post, but my favorite are the ameraucanas because of their hardiness, beautiful and bountiful eggs, ability to free range in a mixed flock, and I LOVE beards and muffs on my chickens.

after that it would be the copper marans for similar reasons

and third would be cochins, both the bantam and standard variety as I think everyone needs a bird that is there just to look pretty :-)

  116. hmmm my favorite that's hard. Buff Orpingtons, ameraucanas cuz i like their little chirping sounds and black australorps. Next on my list to get is the Black Copper Marans. My grandduaghter loves my chickens as well and I would love to share the box of baby chickens with her. It would be an awesome start for her.

  118. I love all chickens. We are currently raising Golden Comets. They are steady layers and have a silly way about them. They are very entertaining. I am looking to expand my flock in the spring with Black Australorps.

  119. I just started my flock in April of this year. I have a Rhode Island Red, a Barred Rock, a Buff and a Easter Egger (who turned out to be a Roo and is being relocated to our local Ag School tomorrow.) I would love to add some hens who lay some different color eggs (blue, green, pink)

  120. I love all of my chickens! However, Ameracaunas are my favorite. They are sweet and lay such pretty blue eggs! I would love to win a box of chicks because my hens are getting older and I just might get some Ameracaunas!

  121. I think my favorite is... all of them! I have a lavender oprington, barred rock, buttercup, serama, and silkies. I would like to experience the personality of the true Rumpless Tufted Araucana. Chickens have become my sanity check since my Son died. Their personalities are wonderful and I love taking care of them. Thanks for the oppurtunity.

  122. We have only had orpingtons but I am enamored by the Ameraucana eggs (and the welsummer too)!! We lost our entire flock to Mycoplasma about a month ago. It was very hard on us after investing so much time, money and energy. Our first pullets had only just begun to lay a few days before being culled. The youngest, 2 weeks, was my son's little miracle chicken that never should have hatched. It was a hard lesson learned but we would love some help in starting over.

  123. French Black Copper Marans are our favorite breed, but we really love most of the breeds you guys have. We just started keeping chickens this year and most of our birds come from a large comercial hatchery. We dont have plans to breed our own for a couple of years, but when we do we want to make sure we have some quality birds to breed with. None of the ones we have now are good enough quality that I would feel comfortable breeding, thats why we NEED to get some from you.

  125. Whoops! I was so excited about the giveaway box of babies that I forgot to list my favourite breed...it would have to be Ameraucanas! Not only for their funny fashion statements...but, because when my grandson comes over for blue eggs & ham, I can't stop laughing...he thinks Grammy's magical chickens are the only ones on earth that can lay blue eggs.

  126. We've raised chickens for 10 years and we've tried our hand at nearly all of the breeds. I love them all; I just wish they would stay out of my flowerbeds when they can eat grasshopper's to their little heart's content on our 2 acres!! As for my favorite breed, I have a hard time deciding between Salmon Faverolles and Blue Laced Red Wyandottes. I'm a sucker for flashy birds and the BLRW win hands down in my book, but I love the goofy faces and antics of the faverolles. I was already planning on another Spring 2015 order from you, but it doesn't hurt to apply for the giveaway!

  128. I love our Arucanas!! They always have that serious look but deep down they are very lovable. Also love the beautiful blue eggs. One of our little hens makes a great mother. She has hatched two batches of chicks and is just over a year old. I would love to win chicks because I love the whole process of raising them and enjoying the finished product. They grow up too fast! :)

  129. My favorite breed is English Orpingtons. They are so big and fluffy that I just want to hold them all day. I would really LIKE to win a free box of baby chicks because I have a serious chicken addiction and would Love to give them a pampered life here with our other chickens on our 20 acre farm.
